On these summer days, I have been enjoying more chocolate milk than my usual hot chocolate in the mornings.

I have cacao for breakfast about 4-5 times per week. Since discovering the amazing benefits of raw cacao years ago, I now consume it much more differently than I did before. It's not just chocolate to me anymore, it's a food that nourishes me on many many levels.

Top reasons I consume cacao in the morning:

Antioxidants: Raw cacao is a food that contains the highest amount of antioxidants (on the planet!), which kill free radicals. Free radicals, created by emotional or environmental stress, are molecules that attack healthy cells and lead to damage and disease.

Healthy Fats: Cacao also contains lots of healthy fats (about 50% fat), which nourish hair and skin, improve cholesterol levels, and support heart health.

Theobromine: Cacao contains a natural chemical compound called Theobromine, which is a vasodilator, stimulant, diuretic, and muscle relaxant. By dilating the blood vessels (vasodilator), it lowers blood pressure. Unlike caffeine though, Theobromine does not stimulate the central nervous system, so it provides alertness without the jittery effect and over-stimulation. Cacao is actually pretty low in caffeine when it is high-quality like the Heirloom Ecuadorian Arriba Cacao we use in our products. It's the low-quality, processed cacao (combined with refined sugars) that contains more caffeine and gives off the 'sugar crash' effect.

Anandamide: Anandamide is a neurotransmitter found in raw cacao that binds with our "bliss" receptors in the brain and releases our feel-good endorphins, causing a natural high and mood boost!

I'm sure I don't have to convince you to eat chocolate (hehe), but it's important to note the quality and effects from everything we put into our bodies. From my experience, it's way more pleasurable to enjoy a delicious and nourishing chocolate treat that will leave me feeling amazing, rather than consuming chocolate that leaves me feeling sluggish and craving even more.

This chocolate milk is also high in protein (hemp milk) and healthy carbohydrates (dates) to fuel you through the morning.

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of sea salt

  1. Add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
