The Benefits of Black Maca
Black Maca. Even its name sounds exotic.
There are many varieties of maca, including red and yellow, and each have their own characteristics & benefits. Also known as Lepidium meyenii, Black Maca is actually a plant originally grown in the highlands of Peru. A rich source of protein and essential vitamins, such as vitamin C, iron, potassium and manganese, Black Maca is the most common form of maca and is known for its extraordinary health benefits, including:
- Improving memory and overall brain function, which can be contributed to its antioxidant activities, among other factors.
- Increasing endurance for athletes, especially swimmers. A study from 2011 also found that it may help with rapid muscle growth.
- Strengthening bone health. According to a study in 2010, Black Maca was effective at protecting bone structure and preventing osteoporosis. Further, the journal International Journal of Biomedical Science found that Black Maca may also increase bone density in women.
- Alleviating symptoms of menopause by reportedly helping to reduce hot flashes and irritability at night.
Lastly, Black Maca has been effective in boosting energy (including libido) and enhancing mood. “While people might not be swapping coffee for Black Maca any time soon,” one website writes, Black Maca “may be a great way to supplement your morning ritual.”
