Lucuma: The Delicious & Nutritious Golden Fruit
This Fruit is Superfood GOLD
Lucuma is a superfood that has been called the “Gold of the Incas.” Delicious and nourishing, the fruit has been grown in Peru for thousands of years. In fact, it is said that some villages call Lucuma the “Tree of Life.” In addition to its naturally sweet taste, there are a TON of health benefits that we love about this superfood. Here are our favorites:
- Nutrient-packed with zinc, calcium, vitamin C, niacin (vitamin B3) and iron. The fruit also contains high amounts of beta-carotene, which helps regulate the immune system, as well as potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and other minerals. Further, Lucuma is said to have the equivalent amount of calcium as a glass of cow's milk!
- Helps aid digestion and is a good source of fiber. Lucuma also contains a low Glycemic Index (GI), which means "the carbohydrate is broken down into glucose more slowly, so that your body stays fueled for longer."
- Rich in antioxidants, which we love!
- Anti-inflammatory properties. Lucuma is known to improve skin health and according to a study by Rutgers University, may help with wound healing and skin aging.
Another fun fact is that Lucuma is said to be used as a symbol of fertility in Peru!
